Where do people go when they die?

Many religions teach an array of traditions and customs from reincarnation to entering into another realm. Should we put our trust into traditions and customs?

The Greek philosopher Socrates once said the following: "THE QUALITY OF OUR BEHAVIOR, DURING OUR TRANSIENT LIFE, WILL DETERMINE WHERE WE WILL SPEND ETERNITY WHEN WE DIE."

Greetings, Prophet - Peace to you and yours! Tell me, was Socrates a Prophet of the Bible, or a Philosopher of ideas? If you are a historian, then you know that in Socrates' time, there was a common belief among people of his day in an after life as well as an underworld! Therefore, it is unremarkable that Socrates would have explained it just as he did. Peace!!

It is clear that from that statement that Socrates was NOT Born Again.
Whether you are Born Again or not determines where you spend eternity.

You Must Become Born Again!

Dear "Okinawa 1985",
Thank you for your query.
The ancient Greeks, and ancient Egyptians, believed in the "AFTER LIFE, THE HUMAN SOUL, AND THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR.
According to the "INTERNET ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY", Socrates died in 400 BC.
Like Jesus, he left no writings of his own. All his quotes were written by a few ancient authors.
Kind regards,

The dead will be resurrected. "And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous." (Acts 24:15) "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out" (John 5:28) "hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works." To the grave. There is NO record anywhere in history where ANYONE ever went anywhere else. Even the Bible says that Jesus was put in a grave. So the ONLY and CORRECT answer is the GRAVE. ONE of the words translated as 'hell' in the Bible simply means grave and nothing else.

Grave, though, means different things in different cultures. It usually means buried in the ground. Some cultures buried their dead by burning them in a pyre. Other cultures bury their dead via cremation. And yet other cultures buried their dead by dumping them in the ocean. All were graves, though.

Greetings, mmerlinn - Peace to you and yours! From much of my learning and teachings, GRAVE is the proper response. It's hard for me to imagine Job asking GOD to let him die and go to Sheol because of the agony he was experiencing, just to receive even MORE if Sheol (the GRAVE - HELL) was in fact a place of never-ending fiery torment!

PSALM 34
15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry;
16 but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to blot out their name from the earth.
17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
19 The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all;

actually Okinawa1985 when Job was alive during old testament (Or old covenant) times the place for those who died was called Sheol or hades you are right but those who had "FAITH" in God went to Abrahams bossom. It was separated into two parts. On one side was sheol on the other side was Abrahams bossom. Many believers think that when Jesus went there after he died he went to get those who were in Abrahams bossom to take them to heaven. Job was on his way to Abrahams Bossom.

Greetings, cookiedoh - and Peace to you and yours! Please read all of this. Also, verify all I have written through your own research, because I submit this to you after doing research of my own. Eliphaz mentioned Job’s father, and he indicated that he knew him. He also mentioned that one of them (indirectly pointing back to himself) was older than his father. Eliphaz mentioned that he was older than Job’s father (Issachar), and that was very true. We remember that Esau

This was exactly what Eliphaz said – that he (Eliphaz) was older than his father (Issachar). So this scripture supports the assertion that the genealogy from Genesis is connected to Job. Another proof focuses on what God said about Job. Job 1:8, “And the LORD said unto

During which period of time were there no others with Job’s righteousness? Returning to the Genesis genealogy, we find that Job must have lived after all the sons of Jacob died and before Moses – in a

That would conflict with the Scripture that there was no man on the earth like him (Job), because Abraham was a man of faith. Abraham received the promise that in him and his seed, all the families of the earth would be blessed. All these scriptures harmonize to show that Job really lived after the sons of Jacob died and before

The "Bosom of Abraham" is a "metaphore" referring to the place of comfort in the Biblical Sheol (or Hades in the Greek Septuagint version of the Hebrew scriptures from around 200 BC, and therefore so described in the New Testament)[1] where the righteous dead await Judgment Day. The "metaphore" therefore would be appropriate if used during and after the time of Jesus, but not prior to.

Greetings, DEN14 - Peace to you and yours! According to the Bible, Enoch and Elijah are the only two people God took to heaven without them dying. Genesis 5:24 tells us, "Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." Second Kings 2:11 tells us, "Suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind." Enoch is described as a man who "walked with God for 300 years" (Genesis 5:23).

The real question for us, DEN14, is "Why did God take Enoch and Elijah?" The Bible does not specifically give us the answer. Although some, like myself, merely speculate that they were taken in preparation for a role in the end times, possibly as the two witnesses in Revelation 11:3-12. This is possible, but not explicitly taught in the Bible. It may be that God desired to save Enoch and Elijah from experiencing death due to their great faithfulness in serving and

Enoch's life was cut short not heavenbound, and Elijah went to the heaven that was created on the second day. The physical heavens not to the presence of God, for he wrote a letter to the King.

Then God went on to make the expanse and divided the waters beneath the expanse from the waters above the expanse. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day

Elijah means my God is Jehovah.

Greetings, BroRando.. Peace to you and yours! I agree with what you have said with regards to the "heavens" and the meaning of Elijah! If so, then for sure Enoch and Elijah were both taken to one of the "heavens" prior to experiencing death. Major thing to consider here is, of course, unlike the resurrected, Enoch's and Elijah's physical, earthly deaths never took place. In that regard, they were unlike other earthly beings based on scripture.

Thank you Okinawa1985 for a very good explanation to me above. Wasn't Moses also never found on the mountain. Did he die or was taken away too. He never did get to go to the Promise land but he saw it from a high mountain. I think BroRando's explanation lacks bible proof.

Greetings Okinawa and Den! Both were faithful men indeed. As for the proof, I quoted Jesus own words to Nic·o·deʹmus, "If I have told you earthly things and you still do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but the one who descended from heaven, the Son of man." (John 3:12-13) Just before his Famous witness at (John 3:16)

Jesus would need to die a faithful death before allowing entry into heaven. Read that account when cried out, “Eʹli, Eʹli, laʹma sa·bach·thaʹni?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

The Jews thought he was calling out for Elijah. But they were wrong. This was to fulfill scriptures at Psalms 22. Read it, you'll be amazed of all the prophecies that were fulfilled and the Jews not even noting it.

Greetings, BroRando.. Peace to you and yours! As MOST know, the concepts of death and life after death, have been the subjects of debate for thousands of years. But on the basis of religion and the Holy Scriptures (Bible), I feel the fault lies MOST in the scholars interpretations of Sheol, Hades and Gehenna! Where the interpretations are met with an understanding that both Sheol and Hades are both expressing the "common grave" of mankind, then their transformation into the word HELL would bear nothing more or less than a revised version of the two.. yet, still, representing the "common grave" nevertheless! The differences in beliefs are determined by up-bring, blind devotion to a particular religious group, false interpretations and/or all the and more.

To me, BroRando, "life after death" puts in place to conceptual beliefs, one false and the other based on evidence found both in Scriptures and in the historical facts which surrounds them. Is there life after death? The Holy Spirit tells me there is. But not one of "reincarnation" as MANY believe, but one of "death and resurrection" as the Scriptures clearly show. For those believing in REINCARNATION, what belief could you find in GOD'S resurrection to eternal life?

Would not believing in "reincarnation" defeat the very purpose of the resurrection? Does mankind die and "return to the very ground from which he was taken?" Or, does he/she go off into another realm or life, immediately, as if to say that is his' or her's resurrection. One belief sound and based on Scriptures, whereas the other based solely on tradition and blind devotion. Life after death is REAL, but only as Scriptures and GOD'S Holy Spirit have MOVED me to believe.

Death becomes the product of the ground. But it's the removal of the "spirit" that brings forth death. That spirit goes back to the One who first gave it.. the One called GOD, the Father, who is in heaven!

That's exactly right Okinawa1985. Any Other interpretation is an attempt to prove there is no hell for the unbeliever and I find that sad because the very people attempting to prove it does not exist may be the very ones going there. The solution is to accept Jesus gift of eternal life through his shed blood on the cross and His resurrection. In Other words believe in Jesus. There is not other way.

A lot of good answers have already been given about what happens to people when they die. The body dies, yes. But the breath of life within them, their human spirit will either enter the place of it's Creator (because of that person's relationship with the eternal Savior, Jesus Christ) or it will continue in the place from where it first entered this earthly life. That place is spiritual death. Everyone born into this fallen world is spiritually dead. That means that spiritually they are disconneced from their Creator (the living God). If they have not been born anew, through God's Son, Jesus Christ, to restore them to God, then they will die without God. This is not a good thing. It is most wise that any person on this earth give full ear and attention to the words of Jesus Christ and His holy apostles and follow them. Follow Jesus Christ and commit your life to Him. His promise to you, then is when you die you will inherit eternal life.

Maybe you are trying not to say what eternal death is like. I don't know. But I must tell you separation from God will be complete and other agony forever. I pray anyone reading this will not go there. Only believe in Jesus and if you need to investigate Jesus before you can believe then by all means do so.

They go to the place between heaven/hell and here and wait to be judged. I've heard God's voice, and I've seen a lord. Not God. HE was loving and kind, but God's voice is booming and terrifying. His voice can make Demons for miles run for the Hills. Now I cut down his TREE and had a dream 6 months later where God's voice boomed from the heavens where I was surrounded on the ground by millions of souls/other people. So I raised my hand and screamed back I cut it down! So I'm guessing that his judgment is pretty scary.

I read this same comment on the christian forum and didn't understand it there either but have you accepted Jesus? Until you do you are living in sin Romans 3:23 and not only you anyone living apart from Jesus. The punishment for sin is death Romans 6:23 and that does not mean merely sleeping and not existing anymore I promise you (God is righteous he must punish sin and I do mean a severe punishment). Call on Jesus to save you and he will. Romans 10:13

The bible calls the punishment for sin nashing of teeth in fire.
I already grind my teeth. I get headaches from it i get pressure in my head
and my teeth are smaller because of it. It hurts my jaw and my neck and
the back of my head. I spend some days wanting to scream. Imagine that 50 times worse for all eternity. Don't go to this place where the bible says unbelievers go I beg you.

You must decide this for yourself but traditions are not anything to base your eternity on. What I'm about to share with you many people try to explain away by creating "Other" ideas about hell. I suggest you take the bible literally. Eternity is a very long time. According to the Christian bible all people have sinned and are separated from God (Romans 3:23) and the payment for this sin in God's eyes is death (or hell). In the bible this is called an eternity of burning fire and separation from God. (Many people also feel it is complete isolation) Romans 6:23. Jesus (Gods son) came and died to pay the debt we owe to God so that we can escape hell but not only that he also ended the separation between God and man. John 3:16, which gives man an eternity with and on Gods side. The bible says we go to heaven when we die if we call on Jesus to save us from hell. Romans 10:13. You just have to believe in Jesus and ask him to be lord of your life. Ask God himself to reveal truth.
