Should Church Musicians Get Paid?

I believe that church musicians have skills that they bring to the service to enhance the atmosphere. They do assist in conducting the services with their skills. I think that church musicians should be given salary or donations for appreciation of their services. What do you think?

Hello friend, a decision such as this should be weighed carefully and not left up to a simple blanket answer of yes or absolutely. There are always exceptions. A blessing is in deed given when one offers the sacrifice of praise. "Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God" (Heb 13:12-16). The fundamental principle is that praise (or worship) is connected to sacrifice. The Bible links thanks and praise so closely that they almost seem to be the same thing. They are not, but they are closely related. The reason they often appear together is that praise grows out of thanksgiving. The process goes from being grateful to God to extolling, lauding, commending, and acclaiming Him for His works, purpose, and nature. So, perhaps the better answer should be left up to the church and those leading worship.

I agree with you and realize how valuable musicians are. Only if everyone can appreciate the skills that musicians bring to a service.

It is always a pleasure to hear a well spoken musician speak the truth of what one deserves as a skillful musician.

Well thank you, again! Mentioning J.S. Bach and of coarse the Red Priest, Antonio Vivaldi, both paid for their outstanding work (in using these two as merely a couple of the finest examples); most of the world's greatest Music by them and by countless other exceptional composers would never have been written, if it weren't for their exclusive employment and works commissioned by churches. Always Musically yours, Frank Pedulla - www.boneplayer.com

Yes, church musicians should be paid. How high is the question that should be clarified. This can be decided by every church community depending on the event. If the musician works almost as a rule for a church community, they should hire him contractually.

I do agree with the point you are making. Sometime, church musicians are taken for granted because they are members or friends attending the church.

It's not actually a matter of "sharing their talents." Some people have more talent than others, and if they wish to share them, and perform gratis, only for fun, fine. Musicians however, spend their lives working really hard to hone their craft(s)... They have also made numerous sacrifices in their lives in order to study, and practiced countless hours. That's what makes us Artists! You wouldn't ask a great painter to merely give away a painting for free, or for a few pennies, now would you

Absolutely. How many ministers, who would question paying church musicians, are themselves working for free?

You are a reasonable point. Many ministers will not do a sermon without getting paid.

You would rarely run into a minister that would deny pay during their community service.

I believe if you have a talent that inspires and lifts up other people spirits, should no thought make people question if you should get paid or not. Your service to the community as a musician should be worth getting paid for.

Does the church give the musician a donation of some kind to show their appreciation? Another question for you will be, does the Pastor get paid?
