What is the best way to learn to speak a foreign language?

What is the best way and why?
HOW?
Participating in a group of other foreigners trying to learn the target language?
Individual instruction with a qualified native speaking tutor?
WHERE?
In your native country?
In a country where the target language is spoken nationally?

You learned your native language from your Mother and Father and being raised as a child wherever you were borne. Doh! So obviously your suggestion is asinine impossible to follow for learning a New foreign language.

So, are you saying that ORPHANS and others that have no father AND mother present NEVER LEARNED TO SPEAK? Now THAT is one of the most idiotic assumptions that I have ever seen.

MM, are you for real Man! So whether a Child has natural parents or assigned parents, aka ORPHANS, the point is that You learned your native language from being raised as a child wherever you are born. So obviously you CAN NOT repeat the processes of being born again into a foreign land and hence then your suggestion is asinine impossible to follow for learning a New foreign language. And that is WHY it is called a foreign language buddy.

You said, "You learned your native language from your Mother and Father and ..."

Now you say something DIFFERENT. Make up your mind.

Children born into multi-lingual families do well on language and cognitive skills. e.g. Spanish-speaking mother/English-speaking father; German-speaking mother/Italian-speaking father, etc. Eurolingua

I think best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in that language by going and living in that country for at least 6 months

Yes Carney, I think living in the country of the target language is the ideal solution as long as you fully integrate with the locals and do not end up in an monolingual enclave of expatriots. Not everyone can live abroad for an extended period of time. Therefore, over 24 years ago, the Eurolingua Institute developed the intensive Language Homestay Immersion programme, living full-board with a qualified instructor and his/her family. It is an enormous success.

There is this new online language service called Babble.
Supposed to be good. Not sure. I do know Roessta was not good at all.

Services like Rosetta and similar services spring up from time to time. It is a good idea but mostly they are 'chat lines' without formal qualified instruction. Good as a support. Eurolingua offers a platform for qualified and experienced language instructors who use Skype. Good for those who cannot travel abroad and good for those preparing to study abroad and, indeed, to maintain their fluency after they return home.

Yes, that is True. So the whole point is where ever you are born at, you learn the language of your parents, whether that be your Natural Parents or assigned parents, like NEVER after. Hence the Native language speaking ability is something that cannot be duplicated since you cannot be born twice. The question then becomes how can we learn a foreign language to speak it as good as possible, to get somehow close to a Native speaker?

I think going to the Country where they speak that language and immersing yourself in that language is the only way to learn a language. But of course outside the country learning a language is the next best choice.

I agree! There is no real substitute to living in the country of the target language.

I think it is essential to have individual lessons with a qualified native speaking tutor wherever you are located.

Actually I do not think individual lessons are that good. To be exact it is much more cost effective and also helps with learning when one is doing it in a class setting with group of people.

Of course, group lessons are cheaper. You sit in a class with probably 15 other students and inevitably receive one-fifteenth of the teacher's attention. The other class members cannot help you much linguistically, certainly at beginner/intermediate level. On this basis it is anything but 'cost-effective'. You would be better paying for one-to-one tuition with a qualified and experienced native tutor, especially if you want to 'fast-track' your language aquisition. Groups? For fun and tourisme.

So I guess you are a Language teacher that teaches on one-to-one basis.
In this case how much do you charge per Hour and what language(s) do you teach?
Still, for most people a group learning environment is better since you learn so much from your class mates too. From my own experience.

Since 1993, the Eurolingua Institute teaches English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, on a one-to-one basis in countries where the target language is spoken nationally. Programme fees for 15 hours, one week, quality accommodation, all family meals, excursions, social and cultural activities, and lots of informal conversation: 1295 Euro. So you saying it is about 5,000 Euros per Month to learn, up to 15 hours per week, a language via eurolingua? Ouch, that is really pricey.

Programme fees are on a reducing scale over time. There are also options for 20 and 25 hours per week of personal instruction. Everything else is included except the flights and travel to get to your host-tutor destination. He/she will pick you up at the nearest airport/train station and return you.

Remember you are 24/7 living in the home of your private tutor and family.

For a full apprciation, it is best to view the details and photos on the eurolingua dot com portal.

Best wishes
