How can Depression be Prevented?

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that Depression will become the second most serious health issue in the world by the year 2020.

Yet I believe that depression is preventable, not just on an individual basis but also at a National and International level.

If you are reading this question I welcome your opinion and suggestions on this topic especially how you think depression can be prevented.

I am seeking 'Crowd Wisdom'.

Turn off fear-mongering hate-mongering Wall Street based Media, which leads to Depression.
Go out into Nature and observe how beautiful and non-depressed Animals are.
Do outdoor Sports. The more you play, the less you hate the more you appreciate the beauty of Man.

Yes, I totally agree with this.
I think there is so much depressing negative News in the Big Wall Street based Media, to sell War after War, that the best thing is to turn Off the TV. Or for me I only watch the Food Channel, Animal Planet and live Football.

Take medications correctly and learn how to manage side effects.
Learn to watch for early signs that depression is becoming worse and know how to react when it does.
Exercise more. Seek out other activities that bring you pleasure, and maintain good sleep habits.
Avoid alcohol and illegal drugs. These substances can make the depression worse over time, and may also impair your judgment about suicide.
When struggling with your depression, talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling. Be around people who are caring and positive.
Volunteer or getting involved in group activities.
Begin the day with yoga and meditation in the morning. Listen to good soothing music. Visit a place of worship.
Focus your mind in other activities and hobbies in order to keep the thoughts causing depression away.

You need to find the cause of your depression and address it. Many people get themselves into a deprsseive. Situation and repeat the same steps that got them there! Also avoid watching the right wing Media in US that keeps telling fear mongering lies that makes you depressed

Yes, you are right, and it seems you have been there and discovered the way out. It is unfortunate that most depressed people are so caught up within that depressive state without awareness of how they got there or how to get out of it. The mass media of course, is not very helpful.

Yes exactly, it is amazing how many people I see that have gotten themselves into a depressing situation, such as a Job they do not like and repeat day in and out what that made them depressed to start with. And above all turn off the Wall Street based Media that is engaged in one Fear Mongering after another Hate Mongering after, while always telling us how wonderfully the Super Rich are and that the faults of the Society are due to Liberals, etc. non-sense which leads to many people depressed

Depression could be due to various reasons. The different forms of depression are: Major depression, dysthymia, Bipolar disorder, psychotic and postpartum.

There are many who are now aware the extent to which depression can be self-manifested, the rest become a 'victim' of it through lack of this knowledge.
Widespread education is certainly one of the ways through which depression can be prevented.
