How can Depression be Prevented?

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that Depression will become the second most serious health issue in the world by the year 2020.

Yet I believe that depression is preventable, not just on an individual basis but also at a National and International level.

If you are reading this question I welcome your opinion and suggestions on this topic especially how you think depression can be prevented.

I am seeking 'Crowd Wisdom'.

1.Take a rest when you are tire. A bath, a good sleep, a comfortable walk may help.
2.Don't always sit in front of your computer. Do more exercise (very important).
3.If you feel depressed, find a right person to talk to.

Find 2 or 3 sports you like and do them on weekly basis.
Find 2 or 3 good causes and volunteer for them.
Start cooking healthy foods.
Stop watching the hate mongering and fear mongering Big Media, specially that sewage of humanity called Fox.

It seems you are a very sporty person.

Your suggestions are good however they require that the individual be motivated. Unfortunately many depressed individuals lack drive and motivation.

This lack is one of the symptoms of depression. Lack of appetite for some is also a symptom of depression.

This is the sad reality.

Maybe just turning of the TV, and when you turn it on selecting positive programs that you know that, after watching them you are generally in a good mood (or at least not in a bad one). I watch less TV than before and I personally feel better :) But it is just my experience after all.

I believe that depression can be prevented by staying as mentally active as possible which includes trying out new hobbies, participating in family and social activities and keeping a positive attitude at all times!

I would also add to your good list:
1- Stop watching Hate-Mongering Fear-Mongering right-wing Media such as Fox
2- Start reading Liberal media which spreads what is good about Humans (about US)

I mostly agree with you about socializing, it is very important to prevent this! However sometimes it is not enough and in these cases I would also add that someone who is depressed should try to find a good Psychiatrist and/or someone to talk with...
