The holidays are upon us once again & Thanksgiving sparks the perennial debate over whether America was born a “Christian nation” is ironic. The historical record shows that America was not “born” Christian, but “became” very Christian as it developed. This “growth” is consistent with biblical Christianity – No one is “born” Christian, but “become” Christian as they accept Christ. Of course, by “born” physical birth is implied. Becoming a Christian requires “rebirth”, a spiritual “birth” (born-again) subsequent to one’s physical entrance into this phenomenological realm. The collaboration of evidence related to the religious history of the United States reveals that Christian influence began with the first Pilgrim settlers who came on the Mayflower in the year 1620. Their Christian faith motivated their movement as a community to the New World where they could practice their religion in peace. What if the Pilgrims were members of some non-Judeo-Christian religion? What would America have become?
