There are a few good free packages, it depends on the type of website that you are planning on building. Google has a nice (free) online website design package that will produce nice HTML based website. WordPress makes an excellent package as a Content Management System (CMS) with lots of free plugins. Personally I prefer WordPress because of the number of available free themes and the ease of creating the site.

Turdpress is a HORRIBLE choice. Turdpress sites are SLOW, especially on mobile. Turdpress sites are TEN times longer than the same EXACT site written in notepad. Turdpress sites CANNOT be made hack proof. Turdpress sites steal battery power from battery powered devices. And on and on and on.

Further, Turdpress has so many bugs the it is impossible to ever find and fix them all.

Finally, Turdpress sites have INVALID code that CANNOT be fixed.

Interesting view, that is why we have choices. What works for some does not necessary work for others. We've had pretty good luck with it and with 3 levels of protection (one of them using wordfence) we've been lucky (this far) not to get hacked. Obviously we custom build our websites, so we don't use WordPress out of the box :-)

Custom building with Turdpress as a base? That is like putting lipstick on a pig. Or dumping shellac on a pile of manure.

Turdpress also has legal issues. Turdpress sites do not adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act, nor similar laws around the world, putting you at legal risk. In some countries the site owner can be fined over $10,000 per DAY for such sites. This is especially true for critical sites like banks, government entities, etc.

Your points of view are very interesting. Websites are viewed using a browser (of your choice) which provides compliance with ADA. Some banks as well as some government entities use websites that run on top of WordPress as a landing site or for blogging purposes. Please understand that I'm not advocating for the use of WP, but merely stating my opinion. However, with a market share of greater than 60% it kind of makes you wonder why most prefer WP as a website platform.

Web developers LOVE Turdpress. Once the client is hooked, the developer has a NEVER ENDING source of income fixing errors, which in turn produce more errors to fix, becoming a NEVER ENDING drain on the client's bank account.

I have never seen an ADA compliant site with Turdpress. Does not mean they don't exist, just that they are so few and far between that the average person will never see one.

I suppose that irresponsible web developers would create a website full of errors. I have been developing software for over 25 years and if there is one thing that I have learned is that no software is 100% perfect. So there is always that possibility that error will occur. Our company offers a full year of website updates at no cost to all our clients, in addition to free fixes for the duration of their account.
As far as ADA, the browser is the delivery vehicle that needs to comply with ADA.

You are correct. No software is 100% perfect. So fixes are needed. However, when you slap lipstick on a pig, you have NO control over the pig. Just rearranging the lipstick does not fix the pig.

25 years and you blame the browser for programming errors?

Blaming the browser for lack of ALT tags, for example, is NOT the fault of the browser. If there are no ALT tags on images, the page is NOT ADA compliant because BLIND people cannot SEE images.

Please don't misunderstand my statement. Browsers are design to interpret and present websites, that is why you have Zoom controls that allow a page to be presented in larger format. So, there is no blame to the browsers here, just stating what a browser does.

A Web Site that is serious, this means it is to make serious money, should be made by Professionals and you should budget for it as per how much money you want to make it from it.
A Web Site that is going to make no money and it is like a business card, then you can make that via one of the free Site making places.

Wordpress is fine for blogfging, but not recommended for a website. If that is all you want, then go for it, but if you want a good solid site, you need more than wordpress.

It is a bone of contention between web developers and has been for a long time.

Turdpress should never be used for anything except maybe a personal website. It produces horrible code, often with code that search engines choke on. Much the same can be said about ANY free content management system.

If this is not a personal site, I recommend that you learn how to code the pages yourself. You have total control that way and when errors appear in the code, you can fix them. You cannot do that with Turdpress.

mmerlinn, glad to see that there are Intelligent People like you and me out here :)
I mean indeed, no better word describes it that Turdpress :)
And yes indeed, Turdpress is good for a personal Web page, aka Buiness Card style Web site. But if you are going to crate any serious Site, then you better know Mountain of Software Engineering tools. That is why Big sites such as Google, FBook, Craigslist, Anoox, etc. are not created on Turdpress or any free CMS software.

You get what you pay for in web development as in life so be careful. There isn't really a BEST free website builder. Depending on what you want and how much work you are willing to do yourself will determine which free tool you should use. I recommend you use your brain and learn some web design coding.

That may have sounded s bit arrogant. It wasn't my intent. If you learn some basic coding you can better determine what you want. You will also be able to add to any freeware you decide to use.
Most hosts offer some kind of free website builders so you could make do with that till you determine what you really want. Just be careful as nothing is really free and you may find yourself stuck with something you can't get rid of.

Clover, actually you were right on target.
That is if you want to create Business card Web sites, then these free Web site builders will do, well may do, since with any free tool you are going to hit the limit really quick. OTOH, if you truly want to develop a Web site for free then you need to spend 4 Years learning various Web development technologies. And can then self develop a OK Web site for free or you can pay the Money to Web site developer with expertise to do it for you.

After all, even if you pay $100,000 to a professional Web site development firm to develop a real valuable Web site, and which Web site after $250,000 in Advertising creates $1-Mill in Sales per Year, you would have recovered your investment and increased it by almost 500% in 1st year and 5,000% in next 10 Years.

If you are not planning a career in coding in the future there is no point in wasting your time and resources learning the trade.
Yes, as its mentioned earlier you get what you paid for. There is no really BEST FREE thing for web designing unless done by some professional as your needs.
You don't necessarily need to spend millions of dollars to get the best website for yourself. You can get them in few thousands.

ViziGen-Page is totally free, easy to download and install, and can be used by the complete novice to create websites as no knowledge of HTML or CSS are required. A full training course takes you through the development of a simple but complete website. There is also a comprehensive help system and a set of YouTube videos that explain every aspect of the application.

Longsolution, that was my point exactly. That is unless you are planning a career in coding in the future, which then after 6 Years of coding enables you to create valuable Web sites for free, then you better pay what Money it requires to create the right Web site for your business and market it accordingly, since even if you spend $500,000 to develop and market a Web site and it then generates $1-Mill in revenues per Year then you have had excellent ROI.

I agree with you completely. There are so many levels of design to choose from. Unless you are just building your own site for something to do with your time, anyone serious about a website should have someone who knows what they are doing develop it for them and spend their time doing what they in turn do best. Grow your business, sell your product, promote yourself and leave the site to someone who does it for a lining.

Hi,
Do you want to build the website or design it yourself?
There are free sites like web.com and wix.com and weebly.com
These sites can be use to design and develop your own site. But you will have to add their website name to the domain name like yourdomainname.web.com/yourdomainname.weebly.com/yourdomainname.wix.com

If you have any further question feel free to let me know.
I would love to help you.

Regards,
Long Solution
