The Scriptural concepts of grace and righteousness

Why are grace & righteousness so widely misunderstood by believers? Many have true zeal for Godliness, but it is not based on proper knowledge. Not truly knowing the righteousness of God, they seek to establish their own by failing to submit to God's. But Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Why do so many continue to follow certain aspects of the law, trusting their compliance for righteousness?
