Is masturbation healthy or unhealthy?

A friend of mine recently lost his Girlfriend, so he is Masturbating alot.
What I want to know is masturbation a healthy act or an unhealthy act?
I mean 1st from pure health perspective and not Moral irreligious perspective.
And 2nd from whether this will increase or decrease his Social adjustment, in particular for meeting new Girls?
