Killing on Behalf of Religion is it religious or political?

Down through history, there have been wars based on religious beliefs. People feel justified in killing those who they perceive have insulted their Prophet or are not "singing from the same hymn-sheet" as themselves. Straight away you see them in the streets armed with the flags of the "offending" nation, vowing vengeance. Is this a religious or political question?
