Does Rosetta Stone work?

Hey all,

I am looking to learn a new language. German to be exact.
And I was wondering what is the best language learning tool?

I have heard of Rosetta Stone alot. Of course, since they advertise on TV alot.
But they are like $495 per lesson.
Is it worth that price?
I mean I see other language learning software/books like at Barnes & Noble for like $59.

Really appreciate your thoughts on this matter.
